THE foundation stone laying for three semiconductor facilities in India begins a new era in technological resurgence for the country as it takes a big step towards becoming a key player in global semiconductor industry. Asthe Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated the Semiconductor Mission worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore with two facilities in Gujarat and one in Assam, India pitched itself as an emerging market on whom the world can depend for their advanced technologicalneeds.ThePrimeMinister’sbeliefthatIndiawould soon become a power in this field is not misplaced and stems from the fact that the country’s scientific community has made rapid strides in this sectorin the pastfew years. Albeit a late riser, India has finally woken up to the reality of the new world where chips form the key integral in everyday life and becoming self-sufficient is the need of the hour for the country. India already boasts of deep expertise in chip designing. There was a need to tap the potential in this vertical in mission mode which the government has now taken up on priority. The need for the India to become self-reliant in this critical technology was seriously felt due to various geopolitical factors including the hegemonic behaviour by prime chip-maker China and constant military pressure on semiconductor hub Taiwan.

 

Most of the world is dependent on these two countries for their technological needs, from mobile to automobile.Concentration of the facility in a limited geographical area that is prone to tensions was always fraught with dangers.India realised the criticality of the situation pretty quickly and instead ofrelying on other facilities for its needs decided to shift to manufacturing the technology on its own. Within two years, India would be able to have its own chips from the three semiconductor facilities. It will be a remarkable achievement for a country that has shown the world how adversities can be transformed into advantages with self-belief and indigenous expertise.
