The eggs prices have witnessed a sharp decline in the wholesale market due to weaker demand. As the temperature increased the demand for eggs has declined not just in Nagpur but across the country. “The egg prices are being quoted at Rs 5 per piece, as compared to Rs 5.50 per piece, a week ago in the wholesale market,” said Moiz Burhani of Vidarbha Eggs, Mahatma Phule Wholesale Market while speaking to The Hitavada.
Burhani further said, “With rising mercury the demand for eggs has witnessed a sharp decline of 30 to 35 per cent, thus affecting its price. The rising temperatures across the country has lowered its demand among the people”. In Nagpur city, the peak demand during the winter months is about 14 to 15 lakh eggs per day. But, now the demand has fallen drastically to about 10 lakh eggs per day. The wholesale egg market situated at Mahatma Phule Market also popularly known as Cotton Market caters to the demand of the city and also smaller towns like Kamptee, Kanhan and other places in Vidarbha region. Burhani said that eggs are being quoted at Rs 150 per tray (one tray consists of 30 pieces) in wholesale market.
In December, 2023, the egg prices were quoted at a high of Rs 6.30 per piece in the wholesale market. At present, in retail, the eggs are available at Rs 6 per piece to Rs 7 per piece, depending on the locality. He expects the egg prices to drop to a low of Rs 4.50 per piece in May. On a daily average 15 lakh eggs to 16 lakh eggs are brought to the wholesale market. Out of this, about 10 lakh eggs are consumed within the city itself while the remaining eggs are sent to nearby locations like Bhandara, Wardha, Chandrapur among other places, he added. Apart from this, Burhani said, the egg production has gained momentum in the country. The Government is encouraging egg production in every state of the country. It is offering loans and subsidy to set up poultry farms. In the past 10 years the egg production has accelerated to 35 crore eggs per day from 20 crore eggs per day, in the country.
