After accepting the idea of starting anthropology course, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has asked senior Senate Member Dinesh Shera, who had first presented the idea in the Senate, to submit a detailed proposal for the same. “We have Departments for Ancient History and Archeology, but we don’t have any platform to conduct anthropological studies. This study assumes a lot of importance. This issue is being discussed globally. The remains found during excavation, human revolution, the human ancestors, their disposition, behavioural patterns, uniqueness, the effect of human evolution all aspects must be studied. Nagpur is located centrally, which has its geographical and historical importance. RTMNU should take up this cause and start the course,” suggested Sheram in his proposal.

According to Sheram, not many people, especially youngsters are aware of this particular branch which is unfortunate.
“Anthropology encourages to do the study of the origin and development of human societies and cultures. Culture describes the learned behavior of people, their languages, belief systems, social structures, institutions etc.,” explained Sheram. Dr Prashant Bokare, Vice Chancellor accepted the proposal and instructed to constitute a committee. The committee would prepare a detail report as to how this course can be started.

Sheram also pointed out, “Apart from the research of this branch, it will also help in providing job opportunities to the students. Nowadays the caste scrutiny committee asks several questions related to the culture, ancestral history etc to the candidates. If course like anthropology is started, the students doing the course can have a lot of job opportunities available in the market. Anthropology provides a deep understanding of humans, it analyses and organises the knowledge gained and makes it accessible, engages in the practical application of anthropology to various areas of contemporary human behavior, pointed out Sheram.
