Polling troubles.. Names of many voters missing from the list
Staff Reporter
Many voters faced difficulties in casting their votes on Friday due to missing names from the voter list. Despite efforts to locate their names through the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) website, voters were unsuccessful. Even visiting multiple polling stations didn’t help. This led to hundreds of voters being unable to vote, despite having valid voter ID cards. Complaints poured in from various polling stations in South-West Nagpur, particularly regarding missing names in the ‘MT’ series of identity cards issued by the ECI. These cards, with numbers starting with ‘MT’ series for those registered in 1994, were missing from the voter list. For example, names like MT/123/786/59837 were absent.
Some voters discovered their names were listed at a center five kilometers away from their location. For instance, voters from Somalwada found their names listed at Sadar. At polling station number 276 of Karnabadhir School in Sonegaon, 22 voters’ names were missing. This was particularly frustrating for voters who had consistently voted in previous elections but were unable to do so this time. There were discussions at polling stations questioning why the ECI issued voter identity cards but omitted names from the voting list. In one instance at Mominpura in central Nagpur, seven names from the same family were missing from the list, with only one youth listed.
This discrepancy left voters wondering where the remaining names had gone. Anil Wadapalliwar, the Election Representative of Congress Candidate Vikas Thakre, wrote a letter to the Election Officer alleging that names of voters were found to be deleted from the list. “In the South Assembly Segment, names of voters from the voters’ list issued by the ECI were found with a stamp of ‘delete’ at polling stations. As a result, the voters failed to vote despite having a voting ID card.” Wadapalliwar demanded action against this.
