Outwitting issues affecting large section of population, the current dichotomy of electioneering in the State is witnessing personal attacks. In a recent move, CM Dr Mohan Yadav fiercely targeted Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and said that even after getting married, she continues to write her surname as Gandhi. Yadav’s comment came in the light of Priyanka’s earlier statement on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her speech. After second phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 26, the war of words between the leaders of political parties is becoming more intense. While addressing a meeting in support of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, CM Dr Mohan Yadav said, “The soul of former Prime Minister Nehru must be shedding tears that his granddaughter does not wear mangalsutra even after getting married.”

CM Mohan Yadav further said, “According to our tradition, as soon as the daughter gets married, she adds her in-laws’ surname to her name. How is Priyanka (Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi) a Gandhi? All these are fake Gandhians. They are only Gandhi’s followers. They want to garner votes on the name, but public will settle all accounts.” CM’s this remark came in response to Priyanka’s statement that she had made, while addressing a meeting on Saturday in support of Congress candidate Anant Patel in Dharampur, Valsad, Gujarat. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi had also targeted PM Modi. She also called PM Modi uncle. Along with this, Priyanka Gandhi said that PM Modi is talking nonsense to you on the basis of the seriousness of his post. He said that everywhere there is an uncle who holds a court and imparts knowledge to everyone. Similarly uncle ji started saying that if Congress comes to power then they will break your jewellery and mangalsutra and give it to someone else.

Earlier, while addressing a public meeting in Bengaluru, Priyanka Gandhi had targeted PM Modi and said that the country’s biggest leader has abandoned morality. They perform in front of people to suppress voice of the Opposition, bank accounts were confiscated and an attempt was made to weaken two Chief Ministers by putting them in jail. Notably, it is expected that political parties should work on fostering an ethical and respectful political discourse plays a critical role in shaping democratic process. It is imperative that political parties engage in discussions that inspire rather than divide, that promote ideas instead of personal attacks but in practice such notions are vanishing. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been attacking the Congress party over its manifesto and the alleged plan to redistribute wealth, a claim Congress has denied. But the debate turns personal in the State.
