The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an extreme heat warning for Vidarbha, raising concerns about its potential impact on voter turnout in the upcoming elections. As temperatures soar, administrators and meteorologists are working to make arrangements and inform respectively, to ensure safety and participation of voters in this crucial democratic exercise. Pravin Mahire, Deputy District Election Officer, while speaking to ‘The Hitavada’, outlined the measures being taken to safeguard voters from the sweltering heat, ensuring a smooth voting process for all, including those with physical disabilities. These efforts include following the Election Commission of India’s Assured Minimum Facilities guidelines, including installing coolers at polling centres, providing adequate drinking water facilities, and deploying medical teams to attend to any heat-related emergencies.

Mahire highlighted that for the first time token system will be introduced in case of potential overcrowding at polling centres. “Usually each person takes two to three minutes to cast vote. To effectively manage crowds and prevent overcrowding, voters will be able to collect tokens and return home. The token will inform them of the designated time slot when they can return to vote. Additionally, voters can contact the centre to inquire about the current crowd status,” explains Mahire. Mahire mentioned that creche for children will be set-up by social welfare groups at polling booths under the guidance of trained attendants and volunteers to ensure that children are comfortable while their parents wait to cast their votes. “Tents will be installed in front of polling centres to provide shade and relief from direct sunlight. Waiting rooms will be accessible to all voters, and a free mobile van pick-up and drop service will be offered to persons with disabilities who have registered their contact details and residential address. Additionally, wheelchairs will be made available at polling booths”, noted Mahire.

Mahire added that volunteers from the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) will be deployed at polling booths, especially for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Regarding young voters, Mahire announced plans for an upcoming awareness programme at Kasturchand Park aimed at encouraging them to participate in the electoral process. As part of this initiative, they will be provided with a ‘sankalp letter’ to signify their commitment. Mahire concluded that after April 6, the administration will be conducting meetings with Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Nagpur, and city doctors for further measures, and guidelines to inform citizens. In addition to administrative efforts, ‘The Hitavada’ spoke to Pravin Kumar, a Senior Meteorologist, RMC Nagpur, who provided insights into the weather forecast for April.

Kumar highlighted that temperatures are expected to remain significantly above normal throughout the month of April and May, with some areas like Chandrapur, Brahmapuri, Gadchiroli, Akola to have higher temperatures than other cities, the most heat prone area. Kumar explained that Nagpur experiences variations in heat across different areas due to urban effects, known as temperature heterogeneity. Additionally, he mentioned, the possibility of occasional cloud cover and rainfall, typically occurring in the late evening, while the daytime remains warm. Additionally, a heat action plan has been initiated in the city in collaboration with the NMC. The convergence of the IMD’s warning, administrative preparations, and meteorological insights is a multifaceted approach to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on voting in Vidarbha.
