A massive fire that broke out in acres of farmland at Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University (JNAU), on Thursday afternoon created panic like situation in entire area. The fire initially started at the field’s stubble and quickly took a devastating form due to strong winds, rapidly spreading in all directions. The site where the fire broke out was about 150 to 200 meters away from the Strong room, where electronic voting machines (EVMs) have been kept in safe custody after voting. Hence, the incident forced a large number of administrative officials, police and fire fighters to rush to the scene and make herculean efforts to extinguish the fire at the earliest.
It is being speculated that someone might have accidentally thrown a bidi or cigarette onto the field, which resulted in fire in the stubble. Spokesman of Fire Department informed that on Thursday afternoon a massive fire broke out in the fields of Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University, where the crops had already been harvested. The fire had spread across acres of land. The fire fighters had to toil hard to extinguish the fire, as strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly. After nearly one and a half hours of intense effort, the fire was brought under control. Since the fire had occurred near the Strong Room, a number of administrative officials reached the scene.
Superintendent Fire Department Kushagra Thakur informed that as soon as they received information about fire on land of JNKVV, police and administrative officials along with fire fighters reached the scene. Huge efforts were made to bring the fire under control. Thakur said it was crucial to extinguish the fire on time because the Strong Room was located about 150 to 200 meters away, where the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) are stored. As soon as the information was received, fire tenders were rushed to the site. After reaching the spot, fire fighters started dousing the fire. But, due to strong impact of winds, there were difficulties in extinguishing the fire. Due to the same, additional vehicles were called for support.
