Hundereds of thousands of devotees thronged the banks of river Narmada and took holy dip on the pious occasion of Vaishakh Pournima or Buddh Pournima, on Thursday. Before sunrise, devotees performed bathing rituals, offerings and ceremonies on the banks of river Narmada in Gaurighat, Tilwaraghat, Bhedaghat, Saraswatighat and Lamhetaghat. The priests conducted Vedic rituals and recited mantras. They explained that performing baths, charitable deeds and special ceremonies on the day of Vaishakh Pournima yields auspicious results. In Sanatana Dharma, the full moon days of Magh, Kartik, Sawan and Vaishakh months hold great significance.
On the occasion, people engage in various rituals such as the Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva, Satyanarayan Vrat Katha and the recitation of Lord Vishnu’s Sahasranama. They earn merits by taking a holy bath, performing charity, lighting lamps and participating in the grand Mahaarti of Maa Narmada. Priests informed that a larger number of devotees participated in the worship and Mahaarti of Goddess Narmada during the Vaishakh Pournima. From Siddhghat in the morning to Umaghat and Navghat along the Narmada banks, devotees from distant places also spent the night.
The river banks blossomed with the sweet sounds of drums, harmoniums and devotional songs in the early morning.
In the early morning, the devotees bath and performed charity rituals. It is deemed that recitation of Satyanarayan Vrat Katha, Lord Vishnu’s Sahasranama and the consecration of Lord Shiva at the Narmada banks are various auspicious.
During Vaishakh Purnima, the devotees also faced some difficulties due to lack of facilities. The situation was chaotic with three-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers causing a lot of noise and disturbance at river banks. Even the police personnel present seemed unable to control the situation.
