In a significant move towards enhancing security measures and streamlining inmate management, the Central Jail authorities have started installation of a comprehensive network comprising 796 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the facility. This initiative aims to bolster surveillance capabilities, deter illicit activities, and ensure a safer environment within the confines of the correctional facility. The integration of the state-of-the-art biometric access control systems within each yard of the prison complex represents a pioneering step in modernising inmate management practices. By implementing the biometric authentication mechanisms at the entry to the various yards, the administration seeks to curtail unauthorised movement of inmates between different sections of the jail premises. This strategic measure is anticipated to reduce instances of inter-inmate altercations and conflicts and foster a more controlled and secure environment within the facility.
According to informed sources, the CCTV cameras are strategically positioned at crucial locations, including entrance gates, corridors, yards, and other designated areas, frequented by the inmates. Moreover, a dedicated control and monitoring center is slated to be established to facilitate real-time surveillance and vigilant oversight of inmate activities round the clock. This centralized monitoring hub will serve as a tool for prison authorities in closely monitoring inmate movements and to address any emerging security situation within the facility. An official said that the objective behind the modernization drive at the Central Jail is to ensure comprehensive monitoring and tracking of inmate movements and augment overall security and safety standards within the correctional facility.
It may be noted that the decision to fortify the Central Jail’s security infrastructure comes in the wake of past incidents involving unauthorized activities, including the use of contraband items such as mobile phones. By adopting the advanced surveillance capabilities afforded by the CCTV network, Prison Department officials aim to proactively deter and detect any illicit activities or breaches of regulations within the facility. The installation of the CCTV cameras is currently underway, with completion expected in the coming months. Director General of the Prison Department, Amitabh Gupta, has been at the forefront of steering this transformative initiative as he actively liaising with the state government to secure the necessary funding and support for the project's successful implementation.
Security measures with biometric access control
The Nagpur Central Prison, which accommodates over 3,000 inmates across its five circles, is set to witness a major enhancement in its security infrastructure with the introduction of biometric access control systems at each of its six yards per circle. With approximately 500 inmates housed in each yard, the implementation of biometric authentication mechanisms at entry gates represents an important measure aimed at curtailing unauthorized movement of inmates between different sections of the facility. This innovative security measure is poised to afford the prison administration greater control over inmate mobility within the premises. It will also reduce the risk of inter-yard conflicts by creating a more orderly and disciplined environment within the correctional facility.
