With an aim to compensate for the trees cut for Kolar six lane project, municipal corporation and Public Works Department (PWD) is set to develop tree corner where more than five thousand saplings will be planted. According to reports, tree corner will be developed in the central verge of six lane road at six locations. Each tree corner will have around 600 trees. Officials said that Plumeria plants will be planted in bulk to for beautification of the road. Besides, trees like tamarind, Peepal, Banyan, cluster fig, Pongamia Pinnata, etc will be planted around the drainage in Kajalikheda, Inayatpur, Bairagarh Chichali and nearby areas. Base land in these areas is being prepared for the plantation.
Deepak Bhandari, SDO PWD, said, “saplings mostly with beautiful flowers and shades will be planted in central verge of Kolar six lane road. The central verge on this road is wide enough for plantation.” He further said that municipal corporation has assured to start the plantation drive on site with five years guaranteed taking care of the saplings. He said the project is being carried out in three parts including conservation of seasonal river with plantation, green corner and plantation in central verge. Under this plan, there will be around 3,000 saplings planted in six green corner, around 1,800 saplings in central verge and around 500 saplings to be planted around the water sources. He said, BMC has been given contract for the plantation drive. In Kajalikheda, Inayatpur, Bairagarh Chichali, saplings will be planted around the seasonal river and drainage to conserve the water sources.
The central verge on Kolar six lane road is ten feet wide and in this area, Plumeria flowers will be planted. Around 1800 Plumeria flowers will be planted in 15 kilometre of area. National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formed a joint committee following a petition that has objected to cutting 4,105 trees for the road construction under Kolar six lane project. The committee members asked to visit the place and submit factual and action- taken report. The petition stated that 4,105 trees were cut for road work.
602 trees shifted under BRTS and 850 in Smart City project dried up!
Green activists alleged that tree shifting scheme has totally failed. They said that around 14 years back more than 600 trees were shifted under BRTS project and many more trees were cut down. Demonstrators at Tulsi Nagar said, BRTS project got failed and the trees that were shifted dried up. Activists and NGOs opposed the decision of such plans like shifting of tress and cutting trees under development project. Nitin Saxena, Rashid Noor, green activists said, “there were 2,400 trees in BRTS corridor area and out of these, 602 trees were shifted from Lalghati to Sehore Naka, Misrod Vishram Ghat, Babadia Kala, Natbaba campus, Nutan College and green belt areas. Even it took Rs 60 lakh in this process. All the trees shifted to other location are dried up and the area is having plain field.” He further informed that, about five years back around 850 trees were shifted from TT Nagar to Kaliyasot, Chandanpura jungle under smart city project but all of them have been dried up. The shifting process took heavy amount.
