With the resignation of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan from Budhni Legislative Assembly, speculation about possible BJP candidate from this seat are gaining ground. Although, schedule for elections here has not come yet, so nothing can be said about the candidate. As it has been seen in recent elections that party contested elections at almost every seat in the State as far as Budhni seat is concerned Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s influence can’t be undermine. Within the organisation it is being said that whoever will be the party candidate his/her name will be endorsed by Chouhan. Vidisha is BJP’s traditional seat. It was represented by stalwarts like former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee (1991), media baron Ramnath Goenka (1971), and BJP leader late Sushma Swaraj (2009 and 2014). Names of senior BJP leaders and loyalist of Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s are doing rounds. Notably, Chouhan won five times from Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency before becoming Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in 2005. Ramakant Bhargava, who was MP from Vidisha Lok Sabha seat, and Union Minister’s son Kartikeya Chouhan are among the prominent contenders.
In 2019, BJP’s Ramakant had defeated Congress candidate Shailendra Patel by over 5 lakhs votes. Apart from these, many names are doing rounds including Rajendra Singh Rajput, Raghunath Singh Bhati, Union Minister’s son Kartikeya Chouhan and Nirmala Barela. Except Kartikeya Chouhan, all the other leaders have held big positions in BJP. Rajendra Singh Rajput is a former MLA who left his seat for Shivraj Singh Chouhan, while former Vidisha MP Ramakant Bhargava, who did not get a Lok Sabha ticket, can now also be given an Assembly ticket. However, it is being said that BJP will make whoever Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan wants as its candidate. Days after Vidisha Lok Sabha seat victory Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan resigns from the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Chouhan, who represented Budhni, assures continued dedication to his constituency. After submitting his resignation from the Assembly membership to the speaker, the newly-appointed Union Agriculture Minister released a video message for his constituents in Budhni, where he assured them of his continued service to the best of his ability.
He said, “Today I am very emotional... I have tendered my resignation from the membership of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly... I started my public life in Budhni itself... I won the Assembly elections by a record margin and in the Lok Sabha elections, they made me win by a big margin. I have served the people of Budhni with my whole heart... My entire life is dedicated to this love of the public and I will continue to serve them to the best of my ability.” Since the announcement of Chouhan’s name, it can clearly seen that he was campaigning to increase the winning margin. He defeated Congress candidate Bhanupratap Sharma with a mammoth margin of over eight lakh votes from this Lok Sabha constituency. (one of the highest margin in the country after Shankar Lalwani).
