EVENTHOUGH badminton sport is growing rapidly in the city, the association is forced to cancel a few age group events due to lack of entries for the Baidyanath’s Yonex Sunrise Nagpur District Badminton Championship which begins from Friday at Subhedar Badminton Hall, RTMNU Campus, Ravi Nagar. According to a post by NDBA on its social media handle, the association received lukewarm response from shuttlers in four categories forcing them to cancel the events in these sections. The executive committee of NDBA decided to cancel events in Open Women’s Doubles in which it received only six entries, Under-17 girls doubles (5 entries), U-19 girls doubles (four entries) and 35+ women’s doubles (four entries). Meanwhile, the tournament will be conducted in age categories from Under-9 boys and girls upto Above-55 Men and Women.
 
The tournament will be inaugurated by District Collector Dr Vipin Itankar at 6 pm on Friday. Suresh Sharma, MD Baidyanath Ayurved Ltd will also grace the inaugural function. Matches will begin from Friday morning. A player can participate in maximum three events in the tournament. The tournament will also be a selection tournament for Inter-District Tournaments organised by Maharashtra Badminton Association for the age category of Under-17, Under-19 and seniors. The selected players will participate in Inter-District and State Badminton Championships representing Nagpur teams in Under-17 tournament which is going to be held in July at Ahmednagar. The Under-19 tournament will be held in October in Satara and Senior age group tournament will take place in October in Mumbai.
 
Events are as follows: BSU-9, GSU-9, BSU-11, GSU-11, BSU-13, GSU-13, BDU-13, GDU-13, BSU-15, GSU-15, BDU-15, GDU-15, BSU-17, GSU-17, BDU-17, BSU-19, GSU-19, BDU-19, MS, WS, MD, XD, MS35+, WS35+, MD35+, XD35+, MS45+, MD45+, MS55+, MD55+.
