THE Uttar Pradesh Government on Tuesday suspended the local SDM, a circle officer and four others based on the SIT report on the Hathras stampede that did not rule out a “big conspiracy” behind the incident. The SIT report also flagged lapses on the part of the local administration that led to the incident that claimed 121 lives on July 2. The report held the organisers responsible for the stampede, claiming they did not make arrangements to manage the crowd and also fixed the responsibility of administration, according to official sources. It said the local police and administration did not take the event seriously and failed to provide proper information to senior officers.

The stampede at the ‘satsang’ of self-styled godman Surajpal alias Narayan Sakar Hari alias Bhole Baba claimed 121 lives. “In its preliminary investigation, the SIT has held the event organisers primarily responsible for the stampede on the basis of eyewitnesses and other evidence. The SIT did not rule out any big conspiracy behind the incident and has stated the need for a thorough investigation,” officials said. The lawyer of the ‘godman’ on July 6 claimed “some poisonous substance” sprayed by “some unidentified men” triggered the stampede. The investigation committee also found the event organisers and the tehsil-level police and administration guilty.

It said the local SDM, circle officer, tehsildar (revenue official), inspector, and outpost in charge were guilty of negligence in discharging their duties. 6 officials including SDM, CO suspended for negligence in duties: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the stampede in Hathras recommended action against six officials for negligence in performing their duties, following which they have been suspended from their services. The local SDM, CO, Tehsildar, Inspector, and Chowki in charge have been held responsible for negligence in performing their duties. The suspended officials include Sub- the District Magistrate of Sikandrarao, the Police Circle Officer of Sikandrarao, the Station Officer of Sikandrarao, the Tehsildar of Sikandrarao, Chowki Incharge of Kachora, and Chowki Incharge of Pora. Have ordered listing of PIL seeking probe into Hathras stampede, says CJI: THE Supreme Court on Tuesday said that a date of hearing has been accorded to a PIL seeking probe into the Hathras stampede that left 121 dead. “I have ordered listing of the plea yesterday itself,” Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said when PIL petitioner and advocate Vishal Tiwari mentioned his petition for urgent hearing.
