In their famous book named The Humming Effect: Sound Healing for Health and Happiness Jonathan Goldman and Andi Goldman have scientifically explained the healing and calming effect of humming sound. There have been numerous independent scientific studies on the impact of sound on the human body and mind. Experts are of the view that sound affects us physiologically, psychologically and emotionally. Sounds are created by vibrations which have frequency, amplitude and wavelength. So our body is directly impacted by sound waves. Low frequency sound is very relaxing and lowers down heart rate and blood pressure. The parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for the rest and digest phenomenon is activated by low frequency sound waves.

On the other hand high frequency has been found to step up the sympathetic nervous system which causes fight and flight syndrome. High frequency sound waves lead to secretion of stress hormones like cortisol. Human brain is immensely affected by sound waves. Soothing and low frequency sounds reduce stress, anxiety and depression. A whole lot of sound and music therapies have emerged and are full of therapeutic and healing impacts. Music therapy has proved very effective in uplifting moods and leading to release of happy hormones. Research has found that there is a powerful emotional response to sounds. Auditory cortex of the brain is deeply activated by sound waves having the corresponding impact on our emotions.

Psychoacoustic is the new branch of science which combines the interdisciplinary fields of psychology, physiology and physics. Since time immemorial humans have been using different types of music and sounds to calm and heal their minds. With intense and wide research in the field of psychoacoustic a new renaissance has emerged in this field. Environmental psychology has found that natural sounds have deep healing and calming effects on our body and mind. All the dimensions of human existence have great connections with natural sounds. Sounds of chirping of birds, springs or running water, whispers of wind , etc are highly relaxing. All the religions of the world have attached great significance to Mantra or sacred sound chanting. Indian culture has developed a very comprehensive and scientific system of Mantras or sacred sounds. Chanting of these Mantras have great religious and spiritual merits. But at the same time they are highly calming, soothing and healing also.

Lots of studies have been conducted on the Mantra chanting and it is found that Mantra chanting activates our parasympathetic and vagus nerve which are instrumental in keeping our physical, mental and emotional states calm and composed. The Bhramari Pranayama is found to be of great relaxing and therapeutic effect. In this pranayama a humming sound is produced . The vibrations produced by humming lead to the secretions of nitric oxide in the nasal passage. Nitric oxide is a pleasure hormone. It brings down blood pressure and uplifts our mood. A very ancient system of Kirtana or reciting the name of the Almighty is prevalent in the Indian subcontinent. It is also based upon the science of sound and music therapy.
