Staff Reporter :
“WE will remain united in protesting the heinous crime that took
place in Kolkata. The girl who faced
this gruesome situation was not
mere a doctor, but she was someone’s daughter. The whole society
should come forward and register
protest against such inhuman and
pervert act. We want West Bengal
Government and Central
Government to act swiftly and provide justice to the girl’s parents,”
said doctors during the protest
march called by Indian Medical
Association (IMA).
“Doctors especially women are
vulnerable to violence because of
the nature of the profession. It is for
the authorities to provide for the safety of doctors inside hospitals and
campuses. Both physical assaults
and crimes are a result of indifference and insensitivity of the authorities concerned to the needs of doctors, nurses and other healthcare
workers,” pointed out Dr Manjusha
Giri, President - Nagpur IMA.
Hundreds of doctors under the
Indian Medical Association, members of Maharashtra Association of
Resident Doctors (MARD),
Maharashtra State MedicalTeachers
Association (MSMTA), students of
Government Medical College and
Hospital (GMCH), Indira Gandhi
Government Medical College and
Hospital (IGGMCH), NKP Salve
Institute of Medical Sciences, Datta
Meghe Medical College andAll India
Institute of Medical Sciences, participated in the protest march.
Dr Avinash Gawande, Medical
Superintendent of Government Medical College and Hospital
pointed out, “We are taking
utmost care so that no patient
coming to hospital in a critical
condition neglected.”
Most doctors while talking
to‘The Hitavada’ expressed,“Is
it only the responsibility of doctors to serve the society? This
thought needs to be changed.
Now some young doctors are
in a mood to demand gun
licence.
They are contemplating to apply for gun.”
Dr Pratik Debaje, President
of Central MARD said, “We had
already put our demands with
the State Government which
agreed to provide the same. In
the wake of Kolkata incident
we feel the security should be
tightened inside the medical
college premises.The no-man’s
places too should have security for which the number of
securitymen should be
increased. The future medicos
should be able to work in free
and fair atmosphere.”
