IN A devastating incident on Wednesday morning, an elderly woman and her nephew lost their lives after being struck by a speeding car in front of Hotel Rainbow on Ramtek-Mouda Road. The accident occurred when a Swift Dzire car, driven recklessly by a youth under the influence of alcohol, collided with the victims’ moped. The deceased, identified asVijaya Bhimrao Thakrele (52) and her nephew Sachin Mulchand Thakrele (30), were residents of Hamlapuri, tehsil Ramtek Sachin was returning from O n e w a y H o s p i t a l , C h o r i y a Layout, after delivering a tiffin to his wife, who had just given birth to their child. While riding his moped (MH-36/AM-1176) with his aunt Vijaya, the car (CG04/NH-6515), coming from the opposite direction at high speed, collided with them. The impact of the crash was so severe that both were killed instantly. Eyewitnesses reported that the car was being driven recklessly, endangering other commuters as well.
 
The driver, identified as Shankar Kishor Jaiswani (23), a resident of Raipur, Chhattisgarh, was apprehended by passers-by and handed over to the police. He was found to be intoxicated at the time of the accident. Additionally, Pankaj Motiram Nagwani (39), who was sitting next to the driver, along with two other occupants of the car, were detained for questioning. The sudden deaths of Vijaya and Sachin left their family and the local community in deep shock. Friends and neighb o u r s d e s c r i b e d Sachin as a caring and r e s p o n s i b l e individual who was overjoyed about the recent birth of his child.
 
The news of the tragic incident spread quickly, prompting thousands of villagers from Hamlapuri, Nagardhan, Ajni and Chichala and surrounding areas to rush to the SubDistrict Hospital, where the bodies were sent for postmortem. Ramtek Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita against the driver, Shankar Kishor Jaiswani. Further investigations are being conducted by PI Prashant Kale. This tragic accident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of drunk driving, a persistent issue that continues to claim innocent lives on highways. Police authorities have reiterated their appeal to the public to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and to prioritize road safety.
