Civic body identifies 150 bulk garbage generators in city

Hotels, sabhagruhas and others generating over 100 kg garbage daily have to adhere to Solid Waste Management Rules

To reduce burden of garbage collectors and further improve the process, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has planned stricter implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules by bulk garbage generators of the city. The civic body has identified 150 entities, including hotels, marriage halls and others, generating over 100 kg solid waste daily. In coming days, the bulk garbage generators in city will have to process the garbage on own. “We have notified 26 bulk garbage generators in city who either have their own organic waste converter units or are assisted by NMC to process bulk wastes daily,” said Anchal Goyal, Additional Municipal Commissioner. She was addressing a press conference at Mahatma Fule Shikshan Sanstha Auditorium in Reshimbag on Saturday. “To ensure stricter implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules by bulk waste generators in city, we have identified 150 such waste generators, mainly hotels and sabhagruhas who are generating over 100 kg solid waste daily. We have issued notices in the month of June regarding self processing of their garbage,” said Goyal. It is difficult for all to purchase costly machines for garbage processing.

Therefore, civic teams have already started coordinating with such bulk garbage generators to process the solid waste using simple techniques, added the Additional Municipal Commissioner. “As per Solid Waste Management Rules, all bulk garbage generators have to process their own garbage and utilise it. NMC has started working on stricter implemention of the rule by the identified 150 bulk generators,” she said. NMC is ready to provide hand-holding support to such bulk garbage generators but they have to implement it soon, she added.

If not segregated, no doorstep garbage collection from Sept 1

From September 1 onwards, citizens have to segregate garbage on own before handing it over to garbage collection vans. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is enforcing the rule once again in city and specially in those ten wards where it is going to implement ‘Atmanirbhar Ward’ (Self-Reliant Ward) project under its cleanliness drive. NMC has identified 10 wards in all 10 zones in city where this ‘Atmanirbhar Ward’ project will be implemented from September 1 onwards. On Saturday, NMC officials have appealed to the people to participate voluntarily to achieve cleanliness in the city under this project. From Sunday onwards, the garbage collection vans will also spread awareness about segregation of waste through loud speakers.

The men on garbage collection vans will also segregate the garbage at source itself and also appeal citizens to do it at their home itself. After collection, the wet waste will be processed in the ward itself, while the dry waste will be managed properly as per the rules. Following wards have been selected to act as ‘Atmanirbhar Ward’ on the experimental basis – Laxmi Nagar Zone – Prabhag-16, Dharampeth Zone – Prabhag 15, Hanuman Nagar Zone – Prabhag 31, Dhantoli Zone – Prabhag 35, Nehru Nagar Zone – Prabhag 28, Gandhibag Zone – Prabhag 18, Satranjipura Zone – Prabhag 5, Lakadganj Zone – Prabhag 23, Ashi Nagar Zone – Prabhag 7, Mangalwari Zone – Prabhag 1.
