In the tales of history, many individuals have changed the socio-political dynamics of this nation, with a selfless pursuit of a better tomorrow. Yet, with passing years their names are now lost amidst the whirlwind of progress, often fading from the minds of those who are now breathing the freedom, One such individual, significant to the Indian history is Padma Shri Shyamlalji Gupta Parshad. He penned the iconic flag-song ‘Zanda Geet’. The lyrics ‘Vijayi Vishwa Tiranga Pyara, Zanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara’, is etched in the memories of many. A memorial dedicated to Shyamlalji Gupta at Dosar Vaishya Square, Gandhibagh, stands as silent contrast to the surrounding bustling locality, overshadowing his significant contribution to this nation. Despite its historical importance, it remains largely unknown to many locals. ‘The Hitavada’ recently visited the memorial and observed that countless individuals cross the road daily, unaware of the memorial’s significance.

The upkeep of the memorial is now under the watchful eye of the Shri Dosar Vaishya Mahasabha. Speaking to ‘The Hitavada’, representatives of the organisation, Adv Prakash Gupta, President, and Adv Hariram Gupta, Secretary expressed their dismay at the lack of recognition for figures like Shyamlal Gupta. “Shyamlalji hailed from Uttar Pradesh, so his legacy is remembered and continues to inspire young and old in his home state. However, same cannot be said for Nagpur city,” expressed Hariram Gupta. Prakash Gupta stated, “Shyamlalji’s Zanda Geet is a powerful anthem that evokes patriotism and unity. The song’s lyrics celebrate the Indian flag as a symbol of the nation's aspirations and sovereignty. Yet, the man behind the song has been largely forgotten.”.

Shri Dosar Vaishya Mahasabha, committed to preserving the legacy of Shyamlalji Gupta, organises an annual commemoration on September 9 to mark his birth anniversary. Hariram Gupta, informs that the organisation maintains the memorial with the support of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), and ensures that the memorial is looked after, and under supervision of the organisation, the memorial undergoes daily cleaning. ‘The Hitavada’ noticed that few columns of the outer boundary of the memorial were broken and a crack was also seen on the black slab that bears the engraved portrait of Shyamlalji Gupta. Prakash Gupta reassured that immediate action would be taken to address these issues, to oversee the repair of the outer boundary and the rectification of the crack on the black slab within a few days. By honouring such distinguished figures like Shyamlalji Gupta, we can inspire the future generations to move ahead by remembering such Indian heroes and their contributions.
