Indian chess queen Divya returns home with Olympiad golds

AFTER claiming the team and individual gold medals at the just concluded Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Nagpur’s chess queen Divya Deshmukh returned to the city on Tuesday morning from New Delhi. Divya, who played all the rounds in the women’s section of the Chess Olympiad, was accorded a warm welcome at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport by Chess Association Nagpur (CAN) officials including Bhushan Shriwas and SS Soman. Along with Divya, Grandmaster Salkalp Gupta, who assisted the gold medal winning men’s team, also landed in the city by the same flight. Divya is a three-time gold medallist at Olympiad. During the Budapest Olympiad, Divya collected 9.5 points from 11 rounds to win individual gold on the third board. Divya was also part of the Indian woman team that had won the bronze medal in Chennai last year.
