WOMEN are magical beings. When they are
around, they spread this magic so very
effortlessly. But the sad part is that most
of us simply cannot see this and hence, cannot
respect her worth.
In 2019, the the gang rape and murder of a 26-
year-old veterinary doctor in Shamshabad, near
Hyderabad, had shocked the nation. The young
woman was raped and burnt alive when she was
on her way home at around 9.30 pm. The incident
had sent shivers down the spine of the country.
And now, in 2024, India once again struggles to
come to terms with a barbaric assault on a female
doctor. The Kolkata incident literally how badly we
have failed as a country to stop such incidents.
Whenever such incidents take place, people discuss it, vent out their anger for several days, but
what after that? Until the next big incident takes
place, we happily forget about that outrage.
What is also appalling is that in cases of sexual
assault how the girl or the woman is often blamed
for wearing certain clothes, for having male friends
or for going out in the night.
Why should the onus of keeping herself safe
should solely be on the girls and women? Why can’t
we teach our boys and men to stop behaving like
monsters? Not every man is a monster. Also, not
every man gets the ‘opportunity’ to become one. So
he suffices with little things like eve-teasing, ogling
at women in public places, spreading dirty gossip
about classmates or friends. That is harassment as
well and needs to be nipped in the bud.
As for urgent steps, stricter and quicker punishment is need of the hour. Justice delayed
is certainly justice denied in this case .
