Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has scientifically processed around 20 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of solid waste from 54 acre land of Bhandewadi to reduce the legacy waste being dumped in the yard for years.
Bhandewadi is the designated dumping yard for solid waste and it accumulated a huge amount of waste for years. NMC has undertaken a bio-mining project at the Bhandewadi dumping yard to process the city’s accumulated waste in an environment-friendly manner and to ensure the area remains clean and open.
So far, NMC has processed approximately 20 lakh metric tonnes of waste. Until 2019, the 54-acre land near Bhandewadi-Bidgaon Road was completely filled with unprocessed waste.
The civic body initiated the bio-mining project at its own cost and successfully cleared the entire 54-acre area. Continuous efforts are being made to maintain cleanliness
in the city, process the
accumulated waste, and dispose it off in a sustainable manner.
The dumping yard is distributed in two parts -- 55 acres and 54 acres. Both areas were completely filled with legacy waste and daily generated waste is also being added to it. Around 10 lakh metric tons of legacy was waste accumulated on the 54-acre site, which is now completely free from garbage. Presently, various environmental projects are being implemented on this 54-acre land, such as a Construction and Demolition Waste Processing Centre, a Waste-to-Energy plant with a capacity of 1,000 metric tons per day, construction of Sanitary Landfill (SLF), and a Miyawaki environmental project.
“Some of these projects have been completed, and construction work of the remaining projects is currently underway, with designated spaces for them,” informed Dr Shweta Banerjee, Superintending Engineer, NMC.
Additionally, bio-mining is underway to process the 21.30 lakh metric tons of waste accumulated in the Sanitary Landfill (SLF) on the 55-acre land at the Bhandewadi, with the aim to clean the entire area.
So far, 10 lakh metric tons of legacy waste has been processed, and approximately 15 acres of land have been cleared. NMC aims to complete this task by 2026, which will result in approximately 27 more acres being cleared for future environmental projects. Nagpur city generates about 1,300-1,400 tons of waste daily.
Furthermore, Miyawaki plantation is being carried out on 5,000 square meters at Bhandewadi, where 15,500 trees have been planted.
