BJP spokesperson Sandip Sharma speaking about the achievements of the BJP government under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) criticized the Congress government for its alleged failures in implementing housing schemes for the homeless. Sharma revealed that in 2022, the central government sanctioned 32 lakh houses nationwide, with 846,921 allocated to Chhattisgarh, accounting for 30% of the total.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, noting that 611,000 beneficiaries in the state received their first instalment, and 180,000 houses have been completed, boosting the rural economy and generating employment.
Sharma added that Union Minister Shivraj Singh recently sanctioned an additional 303,000 houses for Chhattisgarh, with special provisions for 24,000 houses for extremely backward tribal communities and 15,000 for rehabilitated surrendered Naxals. Sharma criticized the previous Congress-led
Chhattisgarh government under Bhupesh Baghel, accusing it of withholding housing benefits due to political motives. He claimed that despite repeated requests from Congress leader TS Singhdeo to release PMAY funds, the state government’s inaction left eight lakh people without homes, causing a Rs 10,000-crore loss to the economy. This prompted Singhdeo’s resignation from the Ministry of Panchayat and Rural Development. Sharma also pointed out Congress’s failure to fulfill its manifesto promise of housing for the homeless.
In contrast, Sharma lauded the BJP government for prioritizing housing needs under PMAY and initiatives like the Awas Plus Scheme, introduced during Dr. Raman Singh’s tenure. He credited the leadership of Modi and Sai for ensuring rapid approvals and substantial progress in housing initiatives.
