‘Associates of Sharma will also be taken into custody soon’
A day after surrender former State Transport Department, Constable Saurabh Sharma has been taken into custody by Lokayukta Police from Bhopal District Court on Tuesday. He had come to the District Court to surrender from where he was taken into custody.
The case against him has been registered under sections 13(1)B and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 by the Lokayukta Police.
Lokayukta DG Jaideep Prasad told to ‘The Hitavada,’ “An inquiry is going on. Upon arresting the accused, we will present him before the court. We came to know about his presence in Bhopal and then he was detained”.
He also mentioned that those who were involved in the case would be interrogated, adding that other associates of Sharma would also be taken into custody soon. A case registered by Lokayukta Police under the Prevention of Corruption Act and a raid was also conducted at his residence by the Lokayukta police on December 19, 2024.
For around 30 days, he was on the run and on Monday his lawyer files surrender application.
In Sharma’s graft case, the first recovery took place during a Lokayukta raid in the month of December after that Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate had launched a money laundering investigation against Sharma, and raids were held in Bhopal, Gwalior and Jabalpur. The ED had reportedly seized financial documents, assets and electronic data from laptops and computers at various locations.
Anti-corruption officials discovered that Sharma was in possession of movable assets worth Rs 7.98 crore, including Rs 2.87 crore in cash and 235 kgs of silver. Notably, Lokayukta issued summons to Saurabh Sharma last year, along with his wife, mother, and associates Sharad Jaiswal and Chetan Singh Gaur, for questioning in connection with a corruption case.
