Rajkumar Sinha, Expert Thematic Group Public Health Campaign India, told to ‘The Hitavada’ that incineration of Union Carbide’s toxic waste material in Pithampur is being done after having discussion with all the stakeholders and especially the local residents living in Pithampur and Indore. It should be noted that even after 40 years, the Central Government and the State Government have not taken any concrete initiative to destroy this toxic waste and instead of destroying it at the same place using new technology, they are playing with the nature and health of the people of Indore Pithampur.

The Supreme Court has said that the waste should be destroyed only after conducting three trials. Government should destroy the toxic material where there won’t be any harm to the lives of people, nature, trees, plants, animals and birds. On what basis did the Government give Rs 126 crore to Ramky Group for destroying 336 tones of toxic waste, this should also be investigated. As Jan Swasthya Abhiyan Bharat, we believe that the Government of India should dispose of this waste in Bhopal itself following same techniques. This can be done on site.

There are many risks involved while transporting this waste from one place to another. All national and global guidelines related to environment must be followed and the Indian government must take full responsibility for the hazardous health and environmental risks of this toxic waste. We are not aware of the various safety measures and steps that were taken during loading of the said toxic waste. We support the various issues and concerns raised by the residents of Pithampur and other concerned stakeholders.
