World Mental Health Day today

Every year on October 10, the world observes World Mental Health Day to create awareness, reduce stigma and advocate for better mental health care for all. In 2025, the theme “Access to Services-Mental Health in Disasters and Emergencies” highlights a serious global concern ensuring that mental health support reaches those affected by conflict, displacement and crisis. Dr Ankita Sahu, MD Psychiatry explains that disasters and emergencies disrupt lives, threaten safety and cause deep emotional trauma.

Even after the physical danger passes, psychological distress often lingers. In many low-resource or disaster-hit areas, access to mental health care is hindered by damaged infrastructure, stigma and a shortage of trained professionals. She emphasised that mental health support must be an essential part of emergency response, not an afterthought. Strengthening community-based care, training responders and investing in resilient networks are vital. She said that mental health in crises is not optional, it is essential for survival, healing and rebuilding lives.
