Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has geared up to make city roads pedestrian-friendly as it is in the process of redesigning 11 main squares of the city.
Increasing traffic-jams are becoming problematic for pedestrians daily.
Due to lack of footpaths or encroachments on footpaths, pedestrians are forced to walk on roads which add to traffic-jams and road accidents. Keeping Dr Chaudhari also instructed officials of the departments concerned to finish the work on time and maintain the quality.
Under this project, NMC is redesigning 11 squares -- VCA Square, Hotel Ashoka Square, Liberty Square, Laxmi Bhavan Square, Mate Square, Alankar Talkies Square,
University Library Square, Wanjari Nagar Water Tank Square, Jadhav Square, and Agyaram Devi Square.
Dr Chaudhari inspected these 11 squares on Saturday.
The Municipal Commissioner directed the officials to complete the work by November. He also directed the officials to conduct a meeting to resolve the traffic congestion issue at ST Bus Stand Square.
Under this project, the traffic signals will also be redesigned to reduce traffic issues on these
11 squares during peak time. Along with this, NMC is also working to develop commuter-friendly roads to reduce road accidents. The civic body is currently working on identifying dark spots and roads where the improvement should take place.
Vasumana Pant, Additional Municipal Commissioner; Ravindra Bundhade, Executive Engineer; Rajendra Rathod; Rahul Deshmukh, Deputy Engineer; and Anand Lamsonge, Junior Engineer were also present during the visit of Dr Chaudhari.
