A dark cloud of sorrow descended upon Kalmeshwar on Friday morning when the laughter of a little boy was silenced forever as as four-year-old Parth Pankaj Kandalkar lost his life in an accident involving a school bus. According to the Kalameshwar Police, the incident took place around 7.45 am near the boy’s residence. The bus (MH-40/CT-4390) belonged to St Joseph School, Fetari. Parth’s elder sister, Gargi, is a Class 3 student at the same school. Their mother had taken Gargi to board the school bus parked near their house. While Gargi got onto the bus, little Parth, out of curiosity, ran towards the front of the stationary vehicle. Unaware of the boy’s presence, the driver started the bus. Police suspect that Parth may have slipped on the road and fallen near the front wheel.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the child’s head was hit by the CV joint, an iron structure connecting the drive shaft to the wheel,” said police officials, who is supervising the investigation. “The impact caused severe head injuries which led to his death.” Witnesses told police that Parth’s mother realised something was wrong only after the bus moved. To her horror, she saw her son lying motionless on the road and blood oozing from his head. She screamed for help, and nearby residents rushed to the scene.

The injured boy was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The tragedy has left the Kandalkar family and the entire neighborhood in shock. Parth was the couple’s only son. His father, Pankaj Kandalkar, is a teacher at a Zilla Parishad School under the Kalameshwar Panchayat Samiti. Police have registered a case against the bus driver for negligent and rash driving. “We are conducting a detailed inquiry into the circumstances of the accident,” said police officials.
