In response to a series of alarming injuries caused by carbide guns across Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has ordered strict Statewide action with zero tolerance against manufacture, sale and use of these explosive devices. The directive comes after several children and citizens suffered serious injuries to the eyes, face and hands in incidents reported from Bhopal and other districts.
Calling carbide guns a ‘lethal threat to public safety’, Dr Yadav emphasised that no lapse should occur in treatment of victims. He instructed that surgeries, ophthalmic care and advanced medical services—including air ambulance support—be provided on priority.
Financial assistance for treatment will be extended through Mukhyamantri Swechhanudan Nidhi. Specialist medical teams are to be deployed immediately and condition of injured persons will be closely monitored.
Following the Chief Minister’s orders,
Chief Secretary Anurag Jain convened a high-level meeting to coordinate enforcement. He stated that carbide guns, which generate explosive pressure waves through acetylene gas, are prohibited under the Arms Act 1959, Explosives Act 1884, and Explosive Substances Act 1908.
These devices can cause severe burns, permanent eye damage and other life-altering injuries. Jain directed that FIRs be registered against manufacturers and sellers and that cyber branches monitor e-commerce platforms and social
media to prevent online sales.
He stressed that carbide guns are not toys but dangerous explosives, urging parents and schools to educate children about the risks. Field officers have been instructed to inspect suspicious shops and online listings, seize illegal items and ensure forensic examination and legal disposal in coordination with PESO. Police training, school awareness sessions and a public helpline are being established to alert authorities to suspicious activities.
