In a heartbreaking incident on Sunday evening, two young brothers lost their lives after falling and drowing in an open septic tank inside a government hospital compound. The boys had jumped over the hospital boundary wall to retrieve their cricket ball when the accident occurred.
The incident took place when Vinayak Vishwakarma (10) and Kanha Vishwakarma, residents of Trimurti Nagar were playing cricket with friends when Kanha’s shot sent the ball into the premises of the government hospital located in Manmohan Nagar.
The hospital was closed on Sunday. The children climbed over the boundary wall to fetch the ball but failed to notice the open septic tank hidden among the bushes and accidentally fell into it.
Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, who was in Jabalpur on the same day, expressed his disappointment over the irregularity. He directed Collector Raghavendra Singh and SP Sampat Upadhyay to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident and take strict action against those found responsible.
Earlier, when the boys did not return after a long time, their friends contacted their families. The relatives and neighbours rushed to the spot and informed the police. A rescue operation was immediately started by Gohalpur Police and Municipal Corporation team. During the search, the children’s slippers were found near the tank and soon after, their bodies were recovered.
Residents have charged the hospital administration of gross negligence, questioning how such a large government facility could have an uncovered septic tank without any warning signs or safety measures.
SHO of Gohalpur Police Station, Ritesh Pandey informed that the bodies were sent for post-mortem to the Medical College. The police are questioning the hospital management to ascertain the reason behind tank lid was open and why no responsible staff member was present during cleaning or maintenance work. Police have registered intimation while further investigation is underway to ascertain reason behind the incident and punishing the responsible person.
