AIIMS Raipur has set a new record in critical care by successfully performing the first Veno-Arterial Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VA-ECMO) treatment in any Government hospital of Chhattisgarh. A 35-year-old woman developed severe heart failure, known as peripartum cardiomyopathy, soon after giving birth. When regular treatment did not work, a team of experts from Anaesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, CTVS, Transfusion Medicine, Nephrology, Gastro-surgery, and Nursing Services started ECMO support along with advanced kidney care. Due to continuous and coordinated care, the woman gradually recovered despite facing several complications. After spending 65 days in the Critical Care Unit, she was successfully removed from the ventilator.

ECMO is a special life-support system that temporarily takes over the work of the heart and lungs when they stop functioning properly. This advanced technology gives critically ill patients time to recover, often saving lives in severe medical emergencies. The case was managed by Dr. Subrata Singha and Dr Chinmaya K Panda, with expert consultants Dr Nitin Kashyap, Dr Pranay Mehsare (CTVS), Dr Ramesh Chandrakar (Transfusion Medicine), Dr Vinay Rathore (Nephrology), Dr Souvik Paul (Gastroenterology), and Dr Vinita Singh (O&G). The dedication of the CCU team senior residents Dr. Sainath, Dr. Satish, Dr.Chethan, Dr. Gaurav, Dr. Rupendra, nursing in-charge Mahesh, and staff Jibin, Jaseem, Srishti, Itishree, Govind, Vinod, Khumendra, Aju, perfusionists Vinod Khande, Rajkumar, Ajeeth, and healthcare assistants was also lauded Lt. Gen. Ashok Jindal (Retd.), Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Raipur, has congratulated the whole team under which the patient was able to manage successfully and saved the life of this critical patient.
