City-based NSH Critical Care Hospital & Diagnostic Centre on Monday announced India’s first reported successful Haplo Bone Marrow Transplant for Ultra Rare LIG4 Deficiency.
Dr Umesh Biyani, Pediatrician and Neurologist, HoD of Pediatric Neurology Department and Rehabilitation Center at NSH, shared the achievement of a landmark medical breakthrough, successfully performing Central India’s first T-cell deplete haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) on a 19 years old patient battling the exceptionally rare genetic disease, LIG4 deficiency.
This extraordinary procedure, one of only approximately 10 such cases ever reported worldwide and first in India for this severe disorder, places NSH Critical Care Hospital & Diagnostic Centre on the global map for advanced cellular therapy. This complex procedure and rare disease LIG4 deficiency is a severe, life-threatening genetic disorder caused by a mutation that impairs the body’s ability to repair broken DNA.
The procedure was expertly led by dedicated NSH Transplant team headed by Dr Atish Bakane, a leading pediatric hematologist-oncologist and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) physician with Advanced T-Cell Depletion Technique.
Dr Bakane said that the transplant and initial post-transplant phase is successful. The patient is responding well but will require close and intensive follow-up for the next two months.
This medical miracle was made possible by the seamless collaboration of a multidisciplinary experts support team of NSH Hospital like Dr Umesh Biyani, Dr Vaibhav Biyani (Cardiologist), Dr Neha Bhangdiya (Radiologist), Dr Nikita Mandhane (Gynaecologist), Dr Rohit Asrani (Pediatric Intensivist), and Dr Priyanka Pawar (Pediatrician and Neonatologist ), along with the entire BMT support Team.
