Madhya Pradesh Power Generation Company Limited (MPPGCL) signed a contract of Rs 23,600 crore with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) for establishment of two new 660 MW thermal power units at Satpura and Amarkantak thermal power stations. The contract was signed in a formal ceremony at State Electricity Headquarters, Shakti Bhawan, on Monday.
The contract has been signed as a major step towards meeting Madhya Pradesh’s growing power demand and strengthening long-term electricity generation capacity. The total value of the signed contract is Rs 23,600 crore.
The upcoming units will be established at Satpura Thermal Power Station, Sarni and Amarkantak Thermal Power Station, Chachai.
The contract was signed in the presence of MPPGCL Managing Director Manjeet Singh, Director (Technical) Subodh Nigam and Director (Commercial) Milind Bhandakkar. Chief Engineer (Projects) Vivek Narad signed on behalf of MPPGCL, while General Manager Jogesh Gulati signed for BHEL. Assistant Manager Ajay Jain, Deputy General Manager Sudhanshu Kumar and senior engineers of the Power Generating Company were also present.
Both 660 MW units at Sarni and Chachai will operate on advanced supercritical technology, known for higher efficiency and lower emissions.
The target for commencing power generation from both units is June 2030. BHEL will supply and construct key components including boilers, turbines, generators, and other major technical structures.
MPPGCL’s current thermal power generation capacity stands at 4,570 MW. With the addition of these two 660 MW units, the capacity will rise to 5,890 MW.
Satpura Thermal Power Station, Sarni currently produces 500 MW from two operational 250 MW units. With the new unit, the plant’s total capacity will increase to 1,160 MW.
Amarkantak Thermal Power Station, Chachai presently generates 210 MW.
After installation of the new unit, its capacity will rise to 870 MW.
Managing Director Manjeet Singh termed the contract a significant milestone towards the successful execution of both projects and expressed confidence in BHEL’s technical expertise. After completion of these projects, MPPGCL’s combined thermal and hydropower generation capacity will increase to 6,812 MW, ensuring greater stability and reliability in the state’s power supply system.
