The long-cherished dream of development of the strategically located Orange City on the lines of cities like Mumbai seems to be taking concrete shape as the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has appointed a project consultant for the ambitious project of ‘Naya Nagpur’, recently. In a filing with the National Stock Exchange (NSE), state-owned NBCC Limited highlighted that it has been awarded a project management consultancy (PMC) contract worth Rs 2,966.10 crore for Phase-I development of Naya Nagpur, the flagship urban-expansion initiative of the NMRDA.

The company stated that the assignment falls squarely within its routine line of work, reinforcing its position as a key Government agency for large-scale infrastructure execution. The PMC mandate places NBCC at the centre of one of Maharashtra’s most ambitious regional-development schemes. Under the contract, the company will oversee planning, design, tendering, monitoring and delivery of Phase-I works for Naya Nagpur, which aims to create a high-tech business, finance and corporate hub on the metropolitan outskirts. NMRDA plans to anchor the region with an International Business & Finance Centre (IBFC) alongside integrated infrastructure systems designed on global smart-city lines.

The Rs 6,500-crore Naya Nagpur programme covers 692.06 hectares across Godhni and Ladgaon villages in Hingna tehsil. It combines Rs 3,000 crore for land acquisition and Rs 3,500 crore for initial development. The project targets long-term transformation of the Vidarbha economy by generating an estimated five lakh jobs, attracting investment, and repositioning Nagpur as a national business-finance centre. Early land-price spikes in the Hingna belt indicate strong speculative and commercial interest. NBCC’s entry adds institutional depth to the project. Founded in 1960 and operating under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the company is a major government-sector engineering and construction arm. Its operations span project-management consultancy, EPC contracting and real-estate development.

With Navratna status, NBCC manages redevelopment of Delhi’s major government colonies, executes projects for central ministries and PSUs, and leads the revival of stalled real-estate ventures under government and judicial directions. Its fee-based PMC model ensures minimal financial exposure while maintaining compliance with central procurement norms. Earlier, the State Government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NBCC India Ltd and Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd HUDCO for to fast-track the development of ‘New Nagpur’ project. The award of the Naya Nagpur contract reinforces NBCC’s role as a preferred execution vehicle for government-led urban-renewal and infrastructure schemes, while marking a key milestone in NMRDA’s efforts to push the region into a new phase of planned metropolitan expansion.
