“Reading is not just for entertainment, it is the process of self-discipline and personality development. India is a bank of knowledge and its glorious culture, history and tradition are its greatest strength,” said Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways during the inauguration of the maiden nine-day Nagpur Book Festival 2025 at Reshimbagh ground, on Saturday.
“To become a ‘Vishwa Guru’ we have to utilise our ancient knowledge. Expertise for better future and knowledge will come through books,” added Gadkari.
The Nagpur Book Festival is jointly conducting by Ministry of Education, Government of India; Government of Maharashtra; National Book Trust; and Zero Mile Youth Foundation. The festival will continue till November 30.
“Today’s youth are more inclined towards social media but the development of thoughts comes through books. To make aware about our cultural heritage and history to the next generation, we have to instil the habit of reading in youth,” said Gadkari.
Renowned author Amish Tripathi was the guest of honour of the inauguration session who talked about benefits of reading.
“Books are the source of knowledge. Instead of spending time on social media, youths should read books to gain better and more knowledge.”
While interacting with school students, Tripathi said, “Eating excess pizza and burger are harmful for health, similarly, using excess social media is bad for your brain. Reading is the exercise to make your brain strong.”
Chandrakant Patil, Higher Education Minister, Government of Maharashtra, presided over the event. “This inaugural edition of Nagpur Book Festival is a beginning of a journey and I hope soon it will achieve the ‘Capital of Books’ award.

Prof Milind Marathe delivered the welcome address whereas Ajay Sancheti proposed a vote of thanks. Vedika Mishra conducted the proceedings.
More than 300 publishers are participating in this inaugural Nagpur Book Festival. Special children’s corner is also to
entertain school students and to encourage them to read books. Many renowned authors will also attend the Zero Mile Literature Festival and share their views.
