ON THE third day of ‘Agrovision’, Central India’s largest agricultural exhibition being held at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Amravati Road, a workshop was organised on the topic ‘Agro-Tourism in Vidarbha.’ In the workshop, experts shared their experiences, insights and in the discussions agreed that there were huge opportunities in agro-tourism for farmers in Vidarbha. The chief speakers were Chandrashekhar Bhadsawale, founder of Saguna Rural Foundation, Amol Khante of Camp Cherry Farm, Ramtek, Vivek Suryawanshi, Director of Thakurwadi and Pankaj Mahajan. On the occasion, Bhadsawale said, “Showcasing our agricultural culture to tourists from different countries is extremely important. Experiences and emotions are priceless like standing near a tree, touching it, observing each of these moments teach us something.”

He explained the aim should be to ensure that farmers can live a happy and dignified life, and agro-tourism is a great medium to achieve this. “Vidarbha’s food culture is unique and rich. The money earned from agro-tourism is not the main goal. What truly matters is the bond created with nature,” he felt. The agro-tourism is one of the simplest ways to give additional income and dignity to a farmer. “At Saguna Rural Foundation we define ‘Krishi Paryatan’ as an activity organised by the farmer himself, on his active farm where leisure learning and fun is combined together. This is a perfect way to integrate and create brotherhood of urban and farming folks,” he added.

Amol Khante of Camp Cherry Farm (Ramtek) shared his experience. He said, “Ramtek region is known for paddy cultivation. Students, tourists, and families from cities often visit the Camp Cherry Farm to experience nature first-hand. This side-business, started alongside farming, has become a good source of income for us.” Vivek Suryawanshi, Director of Thakurwadi said, “Due to the hectic pace of life, access to simple home-cooked meals has become difficult. To give tourists homely Marathi food when they travel, we started Thakurwadi. We serve a complete traditional Maharashtrian meal including pickles, chutneys, and salads.” The programme was anchored by Dr Atul Dhoke.
