Staff Reporter :
THE capital city of Bhopal is
gripped by a severe wave of the
online crime known as
‘Sextortion’ (Sexual
Harassment cum
Blackmailing). Given the rapid increase in cases, the Cyber
Crime Police
Commissionerate has issued
a special vigilance advisory to
citizens. According to the
police, the alarming trend
involves criminals using
obscene video calls and fake
social media profiles to trap
and blackmail people over the
past few months.
What is ‘Sextortion’ and How
are Criminals Trapping
Victims?
Cyber Crime Police have
described ‘Sextortion’ as a serious offence. It is a method of
online sexual exploitation
where criminals demand
money or other inappropriate
requests by threatening to
publicly release a person’s
objectionable photos or
videos.
Criminals employ highly
sophisticated methods to
ensnare their victims: Trust
and Friendship: They create
fake profiles on social media
and dating apps to initiate
friendship and build trust.
Video Recording:
Objectionable video calls are
recorded during the conversation. Threats and Pressure:
Once they possess private
material, criminals threaten
to send the content to the victim’s family and friends. This
pressure often forces victims
to immediately pay money.
Mental and Financial
Threat: Police warned that victims of ‘Sextortion’ suffer from
severe mental stress, serious
depression, and significant
financial loss. Out of shame
and fear, many victims even
take suicidal steps, emphasising that this crime should not
be taken lightly. The police
have appealed to families,
especially youth, to be aware
of this threat.
Ways to Fight and Avoid
Blackmail: The Cyber Crime
Police have advised citizens
to adopt the following measures to stay safe from this
blackmailing scheme: Stay
Safe: Do not share private photos or videos with strangers.
Strengthen the privacy settings
of social media accounts.
Immediately reject suspicious
links or unknown video calls.
Do Not Pay: If blackmailed,
absolutely do not send money to the criminal, as paying
never stops the cycle. \
Report Immediately:Do not
panic. Secure all evidence
(chats, numbers, etc.) and file
a police complaint without
delay. Where to File a Complaint?
