Hiwarkhed to witness its first election after gaining municipal council status

Aspiring to capture power in local self government bodies, all major political parties who have alliance at the State level would be fighting against each other in all five municipal councils and one nagar panchayat in the district. Akot, Telhara, Murtizapur, Balapur and Hiwarkhed Municipal Councils and Barshitakli nagar panchayat would go to polls soon. In Akot, eight candidates are in the fray for the post of civic cheif while 187 candidates are fighting for the councillor’s post.

The BJP, Congress party and both factions of NCP are contesting. In Telhara, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) may prove to be a challenge for BJP and Shiv Sena (UBT). Here, five candidates are vying for the civic chief’s post. It may be mentioned here that the Hiwarkhed Municipal Council would be conducting elections for the first time since its formation. It comes under Akot Assembly constituency from where BJP’s Prakash Bharsakle is MLA and it remains to be seen how he mobilises the voters to ensure their support as Congress and NCP (SP) seem to have an upper hand here. All major parties have fielded their candidate for the post of civic chief in Murtizapur. Here, 168 candidates are in fray for member seats. In Balapur, five candidates are fighting for the posts of civic chief. The real contest will be between local Nagar Vikas Aghadi and the Congress. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Nitin Deshmukh has a hold here which may benefit the Mahavikas Aghadi. Barshitakli, which is a Nagar Panchayat, will see multi-party contest. Five contestants are in the fray for the post of civic chief. The area is dominated by BJP MLA Harish Pimple.
