Elections of Nagar Parishad, Nagar Panchayat to be held as per schedule

SC makes it clear that elections of Municipal Corporations be notified

The results of 17 Nagar Panchayat and Municipal Councils, which have crossed the limit of 50% reservations, will be kept reserved and declared after the verdict of Supreme Court. The next hearing is scheduled on January 21, 2026. Confusion reigned supreme as to whether the Nagar Panchayat and Municipal Council polls will be held as per schedule. But on Friday, Supreme Court made it clear that the elections will be conducted on December 2, 2025. Supreme Court has observed that only two Municipal Corporations have exceeded the 50% reservation limit, considering which it has asked the authorities to notify the elections of all Municipal Corporations in the State. State Election Commission announced the elections on November 4, 2025.

The reservations were declared earlier. Supreme Court judgment came three days ago that made it clear that the exceeding limit of reservations won’t be tolerated and elections at those places would be cancelled. Considering the prescribed percentage of the reservation quota, it is beyond the capacity of Government to do it. Along with the 17 Nagar Panchayats and Municipal Councils, the Nagpur Zilla Parishad too has crossed the limit and the reservation in Nagpur Municipal Corporation too has reached 54.33 per cent. The Municipal Councils in district crossing the reservation limit include Digdoh (54.17%), Butibori (52.38%), Khapa (55%), Kanhan-Pimpri (75%), Umred (55.56%), Katol (52%), Wadi (55.56%) Kamptee (58.82%). Nagar Panchayats violating reservation criteria include Yerkheda (58.82%), Nildoh (58.82%), Godhani Railway (58.82%), Kandri-Kanhan (58.82%), Besa-Pimpla (52.94%), Bidgaon- Tarodi (52.94%), Bhiwapur (70.49%), Mahadula (70.59%), Mouda (52.94%).

Will liquor ban be effective?

The Collectorate has issued a circular banning sale of liquor during election time. The sale of liquor is prohibited on December 1, 2 and 3. But some say it will not affect those who drink. The reason is the way it is banned. For example, the sale is banned in Wanadongri, Nildoh, Digdoh which are going to polls, but not prohibited in Hingna, the Municipal Council whose term is not over. It means, people of Wanadongri and adjoining areas where liquor is prohibited can buy it at Hingna. According to the sources of Election Commission, it is not allowed to

Campaign extended

Usually the campaign of any election ends two days prior to the voting day. Suppose the voting is scheduled on December 2, then the campaign is expected to end on November 30. But State Election Commission has extended the campaign time for the polls of Nagar Panchayat and Municipal Councils to be scheduled on December 2, 2025. Now the candidates can do their campaigning till 10 pm of December 1, 2025.
