UNION Home and
Cooperation Minister, Amit
Shah, inaugurated the threeday 60th DGP/IGP Conference
in Raipur, on Friday. In his
address, the Home Minister
stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, the DGP/IGP
Conference has emerged as a
crucial forum for resolving
internal security issues, moving from problem-solving,
challenges, and strategies to
policy formulation.
Highlighting the Modi government’s actionable points
against the complete eradication of Naxalism, the Home
Minister noted the significant
strengthening of the security
perimeter. Shah mentioned
that 586 fortified police stations have been constructed
over the last 7 years. As a direct
result, the number of Naxalaffected districts has dramatically decreased from 126 in
2014 to only 11 today.
Amit Shah expressed confidence that the nation will be
completely free from the problem of Naxalism before the next
DGP/IGP Conference.
Shah further asserted that
the Modi government has provided a permanent solution to
the problems in the three
hotspots Naxalism, North-East,
and Jammu & Kashmir which
have been “festering sores” for
the country for the past 40
years. He expressed hope that
these regions will soon become
like the rest of the country.
The Home Minister underscored the government’s
achievements in strengthening the legal framework,
including the National
Investigation Agency (NIA) and
the Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act (UAPA). He
also highlighted the creation
of three new criminal laws and
robust legislation for narcotics
and fugitives. Shah declared
that once the three new criminal laws are fully implemented, India’s policing will become
the most modern in the world.
Citing the example of the
ban on the Popular Front of
India (PFI), the Home Minister
noted that the nationwide raids
and arrests at their locations,
following the ban, were a prime
example of excellent coordination between the Center and
the States. He detailed the strategy being used to strike hard
at radicalism, extremism, and
narcotics, which involves working on three key points:
Accuracy of Intelligence,
Clarity of Objective and
Synergy of Action.
Shah reiterated the commitment to creating a system
that strikes at narcotics and
organised crime with a 360-
degree approach, ensuring
“not an inch of ground” is available to narco-traders and criminals in the country.
He stressed the urgent need for State Police forces to work with the
Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to launch a severe crackdown on
state, national, and international narcotics gangs and put their masters behind bars.
