City police target notorious gangs  Before the first banner of elections could be put up, the police have already taken a bold step. More than 300 criminals have been ordered to leave the city. Over the last ten months, a major crackdown has been carried out, and 304 criminals have been externed from Nagpur city limits. Police officials say that white-collar criminals, local goons, and gambling rackets become highly active as elections approach. Their activities disturb law and order and create fear among voters.

Therefore, this year the police have decided to be strict right from the beginning. Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal had recently instructed all Zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to prepare updated lists of notorious criminals. Secret surveillance on their daily movements is also being done. The externment action is being taken against gang members who repeatedly commit crimes. After completing their sentence or after fresh offences, such criminals are ordered to leave the city for a fixed period - from a few days during large festivals or events, up to two years. Before the final decision, a show-cause notice is issued. After the accused gives his reply, the concerned DCP studies the case and decides whether externment is required. Zone One recorded the highest action, with 140 criminals being externed under both sections combined. Zone Five has externed 78 accused for periods ranging from one year to two years. Other zones have also taken strong measures.

Apart from individual cases, several gangs have also been targeted. The DCPs have externed members of notorious gangs led by Babul, Kunal, Nilesh alias Chotu, Rajesh, Pawan, Mangal, Aniket from Wadi, Shubham from MIDC, Sagar from Monu Sonegaon, Rahul from Pratap Nagar, and Shailesh, Karan, Rohit from Bajaj Nagar. Prateek and his associates from Ajni have also been ordered to leave the city. Police say this action will continue until elections end, to maintain law and order.
