THE Bhilai Municipal
Corporation has achieved
the highest number of dog
sterilisation and vaccination
procedures in Chhattisgarh,
marking a significant step
toward controlling the stray
dog population in the city.
The corporation is carrying
out this work in a systematic manner under the guidelines of the state government
and the recent directives of
the Supreme Court.
Health Officer Javed Ali
informed that from April
2025 to date, a total of 1,610
dogs have been sterilised
and vaccinated. This largescale effort aims to reduce
uncontrolled breeding and
ensure the safety and wellbeing of both residents and
stray animals.
To strengthen the work at
the ward level, teams from
People for Animal Welfare
have been deployed across
all wards. Each ward has
been assigned a specific
feeding point where stray
dogs can be monitored and
cared for.
This organised
approach helps in identifying dogs for sterilisation and
maintaining hygiene and
order in public spaces.
Following state instructions, letters have been sent
to schools, colleges, hospitals, railway stations, bus
stands, sports complexes
and stadiums to enforce
proper monitoring and
appoint nodal officers. These
institutions have been
directed to secure their
premises with boundary walls to prevent stray dogs from
entering and to ensure regular supervision.
The corporation continues to operate its existing dog shelter, which
can accommodate 15 to 20 dogs at a time for sterilisation
procedures. The work is being carried out through People
for Animal Welfare, an agency registered with the Animal
Welfare Board. After sterilisation and vaccination, the dogs
are released back to the same locations as required by the
guidelines.
