Renowned architect Samira Rathod, a name synonymous with elegant, people-centric structures, recently visited the city to deliver a keynote lecture at the 22nd Mavlankar Memorial Oration. On the sidelines of the event, Samira Rathod spoke candidly with The Hitavada about her career, the principles that guide her work, and the challenges facing contemporary architecture in India. Rathod, who has accumulated more than 25 years of experience and designed numerous projects, explained why she was drawn to architecture: “I was always fascinated by the artistic side of building - how a structure can be both a visual statement and a functional space. The designs of neighbourhoods and sky-lines in Singapore, as well as the historic towns of several European countries, inspired me to pursue a profession where art and utility coexist.”

For Samira Rathod, the essence of good design lies in its relevance to everyday life. “A city, a locality or a building should never be judged solely on aesthetics,” she asserted. “Functionality, especially the convenience of the common man, must be at the core of every project.” She stressed the meticulous use of resources - land, material and energy - and the importance of serving a broad cross-section of society. “Designers must ask how a space will be used by the many, not just the few,” she added.
