IQBAL Ahmed, a Guinness Book record holder, is an ardent vintage car collector and city’s renowned restorer. To name a few, he is also owner of Land Rover model 1955 Series 1. It is a British off-road vehicle. Inspired by the World War II Jeep, it was produced by the Rover Motor Car company of Solihull Birmingham, England. “I purchased the vehicle in a dilapidated condition from the Health Department, Akola in the year 1992. It was restored in its original form and colour.

The Land Rover is an off-road, cross country car. It is used in African countries for adventures, hunting and jungle safaris,” Ahmed informed. At present the Land Rover rules the road in spite of being from the bygone era. “Vintage cars are like part of our family. Family members take pride in driving the vehicle. It is a treat to watch my children and grandchildren enjoy ride over muddy puddles and hilly terrains. True to its slogan — Above and Beyond,” added Ahmed. Ahmed requested government to encourage owners.

“I would like to take this opportunity to request the government to encourage the vintage vehicle owners. As in many countries, our government should also exempt such vehicles from registration charges, RTO taxes and insurance. These oldies can never match new strict PUC norms as it was not there in old technology, so it may also be relaxed,” he pleaded. “Today, we use these vehicles only for vintage rallies or exhibition. If it is in running condition the maintenance would be more easy. Many parts get jammed and cease to work if not operated on a regular basis,” Ahmed reasoned.
