Massive fire broke out in the coke oven gas supply pipeline near the Power and Blowing Station (PBS-II) of
Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) around 12:00 noon on Friday.
After three-hours of effort, the fire brigade extinguished the fire using 10 to 12 vehicles using water cannons. Previously, the supply of coke oven gas to Blast Furnace No. 8, which was supplied as fuel through this pipeline, had to be stopped. To do so, a
U-seal in the pipeline was activated. Production at Blast Furnace No. 8 has been halted for approximately four hours, resulting in losses worth crores of rupees. A fire broke out in coke oven gas pipeline. The fire was so intense that the cables in the adjacent cable gallery also caught fire. Upon receiving the information, fire brigade vehicles arrived immediately and began extinguishing the fire.
Due to the fire in coke oven gas supply pipeline, the fire was becoming severe. Therefore, it became necessary to stop the gas from spreading. Management immediately activated the U-seal to stop the Coke oven gas supply. The pipeline already has a U-seal, shaped like the letter U. It was filled with water. As a result, the production at Blast Furnace No. 8 halted after the supply of coke oven gas, used as fuel, was cut off. According to sources, rescue operations are still underway, and coke oven gas supply has not been resumed. Sources also informed that, the mill area has been affected due to the gas supply cutoff. Production at the BRM Mill, Rail Mill, and Wire Rod Mill has been affected.
