The demand to connect Raja Bhoj International Airport to the Metro Rail project is rapidly gaining traction, driven by the city's fast-growing air traffic and the need for a well-organized transport network suitable for a modern capital city. Although the airport connectivity was not included in the approved plan for the first phase (Phase 1), officials from the Airport Authority and Metro have clearly confirmed that this connection will be a crucial and indispensable part of future plans, specifically Metro Phase 2.

This is intended to ensure passenger convenience, seamless access to the city’s major business hubs, and ‘multi-modal integration.’ According to Airport Authority data, Bhopal Airport currently handles over 1.7 million passengers annually, with an average annual growth rate of 10-12%. As the state capital, this number continues to rise, putting severe pressure on existing road routes and taxi services. Airport officials believe that providing end-to-end connectivity to major destinations within the city, such as Habibganj Railway Station, ISBT, and New Market, is mandatory for passengers. Currently, travel from the airport to the city can take 45 minutes to an hour during peak hours—a time that would be significantly reduced with Metro connectivity.

A senior official stated, “The Metro connection will provide passengers with direct, fast, and comfortable travel, reducing their reliance on frequent taxis or other private means. It will link the airport to the city's busiest areas, which will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also save an average of 30 minutes of travel time. This facility will prove to be a boon for business travelers who prioritize time saving.” Current plan and future possibilities The airport was not included in the first phase of the Metro project, which starts from Govindpura and connects other parts of the city.

Discussions with senior Metro officials clarified that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the initial phase focused only on core, densely populated areas. However, it was also noted that options for future expansion were kept open during the DPR preparation, acknowledging the necessity of airport connectivity. Authority officials have strongly indicated that if the second phase (Phase 2) proceeds, the plan to connect the airport will be at the top of the priorities. Initial technical and conceptual planning suggests connecting the airport from the 'Crown' area, which will serve as a strategic junction in the northwest part of the city.

Emphasis on multi-modal integration Both the Metro Project and the Airport Authority are emphasizing the concept of 'Multi-Modal Integration', which means facilitating seamless movement for passengers between the Metro, railway station, bus terminal, and the airport. Airport Director Ramjee Awasthi stated, “The arrival of the Metro will not only benefit passengers but is also excellent for the environment. Multi-modal integration—linking other forms of public transport with the Metro—will reduce the use of private vehicles, significantly lower the carbon footprint, and decrease traffic pressure within the city.

This facility is essential for a modern capital, as airport connectivity is an integral part of a developed, efficient, and eco-friendly transport culture in every metropolitan city, as seen in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.”
