THEDepartment of Zoology and
Biotechnology, Government
Science College and the
Zoological Survey of India,
Kolkata jointly host a five-day
international workshop on
‘Taxonomy, Museology,
Geospatial, Molecular
Techniques and
Instrumentation’. The workshop
was inaugurated on Monday and
will continue till December 19. Dr P R Chandelkar, Additional
Director, Higher Education,
Jabalpur Division, who was invited as chief guest, told the students that research is reaching
at another level currently. Hence,
it becomes necessary to identi
fy species even at the molecular
level. Taxonomy plays a crucial
role in the study of taxonomy.
Students should set their goals
and make the right efforts in that
direction.
There are immense
possibilities for students in the
field of life sciences. Principal Dr Shikha Saxena
mentioned about climate
change, which has brought about
many changes in biodiversity.
Emphasising over it’s proper
study, she said that the students
should visit the college’s Zoology
and Geology museum and learn
the techniques of preserving and
displaying animals. HoD Dr
Sunita Sharma, explained the
programme’s outline and the
workshop’s importance. Dr Neha
Dhimole, a scientist from
Germany, said that students
should always think about mov

Keynote speaker on second session, Dr Aniruddha Majumdar, a
scientist from State Forest
Research Institute, spoke about
conservation of mega-herbivores
like Elephants and Sambhar in MP
and said that when students visit a national park, they should not
only focus on Tigers and Leopards
but also observe other animals.
Mega-herbivores are found in
grasslands, sugarcane fields, who
play a very important role in the
ecosystem and are called grass
land engineers. He also explained
the methods of their counting
and management.
