Nagpur’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the largest Government hospital in Central India, is getting a corporate look. From shelter for patients’ relatives to auditorium to new parking to new Operation Theatre (OT), everything is coming up with new face. Shelter centres are now being built here for the relatives of patients. Thanks to the initiative of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the hospital’s appearance will be completely transformed in the coming days, and state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for patients are becoming its hallmark.

The GMCH, popularly known as Medical, is the biggest support system for common people not only in Nagpur and Vidarbha, but also in Central India. Therefore, patients from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh also come here for treatment. Chief Minister Fadnavis provided substantial funds to ensure that the poor receive state-of-the-art healthcare facilities at this hospital, and now Medical is undergoing a transformation. State-of-the-art operating theatre, a multi-story parking plaza, and care for patients’ relatives are among the features that have become characteristic of Medical. The shelters will have essential facilities such as fans, hot water, toilets, and chairs. Each centre has a capacity of 200 people, so at least 2,200 people can stay there.

Skywalk

A skywalk has been constructed from the Casualty Department to the Trauma Centre, eliminating the difficulty of transporting patients outdoors in the rain or sun. Previously, critically ill patients had to be moved to the Trauma Care Centre in the sun and rain, but now a covered skywalk connects these two buildings.

Paying Wards

Despite having high-quality facilities, many middle-class or upper middle-class patients often do not come to the medical college. Therefore, the number of paying wards is being increased. 80 such rooms are now available here. Some of these are air-conditioned.

Parking Plaza

Three complexes are being constructed for a parking plaza in the area. One is five-storied and the other is four-storied. This will prevent traffic congestion on the roads. A girls’ hostel with 435 rooms, a modular operation theatre, and a heart and liver transplant centre are in the final stages of construction on the college premises. The sports complex is nearing completion, including a gym, high-mast lights, a badminton hall, and a renovated swimming pool. Construction of the new nursing college building is also underway. 60 percent of the hospital’s cancer hospital is complete, and it will offer more facilities than private hospitals. Cement roads and beautification work are underway in the premises, and after all the work is completed, the medical college will get a corporate look. Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye expressed the sentiment that now common man in the society can receive high-quality healthcare facilities, and that is why the situation is changing today.

Medical Superintendent Dr Avinash Gawande stated, “The change in infrastructure will ultimately work for the patients’ welfare. One should not say that only corporate look doesn’t solve the problem. It will provide ease in the overall functioning leading to patients’ benefits.” Vice Dean Dr Devendra Mahore said, “The care of relatives, the visitors, everyone’s convenience is being looked after. Nowadays, the healthcare sector is very vast and it is being well taken care of.”
