IN Asignificant move toward
inclusive urban transit, the
Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail
Corporation (MPMRCL) con
ducted an extensive mock drill
involving differently-abled citizens on Wednesday. The exercise
was conducted to ensure a seam
less, barrier-free experience for
all passengers ahead of the for
mal inauguration of the Bhopal
Metro scheduled for December
20. The Metro administration
conducted a detailed analysis of
the journey, starting from the
station entrance to the interior
of the train coaches. The drill
focused on three primary accessibility categories: Wheelchair
Accessibility: Experts checked
the gradient of ramps and the
height of elevator controls.
The
drill ensured that wheelchair
users could navigate ticket coun- ters and Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates independently without
external assistance.
Tactile Navigation for the
Visually Impaired:The tac
tile tiles installed on the
floors were tested under real
world conditions to verify if
they correctly guide users
and identify potential hazards. Additionally, the clari
ty of Braille signage in lifts
and the effectiveness of
audio announcements were
meticulously reviewed.
Digital Systems for the
Hearing Impaired: For commuters with hearing impairments, the effectiveness of
visual display boards and
emergency visual alarms was
tested to ensure that
communication barriers do
not compromise passenger
safety.
Staff Sensitisation and
Technical Refinement: A
vital component of the mock
drill was the sensitisation
program for Metro personnel.
Security staff and station
controllers received intensive training on assisting differently-abled passengers
with dignity.
This included the proper
use of ‘evacuation chairs’
during emergencies.
Based on the feedback
received during the drill,
instructions for ‘design modifications’, such as adjusting
signage colours and further
minimising the gap between
the platform and the train,
have already been issued.
