79th batch of IRS officers inaugurated at National Academy of Direct Taxes
“TAX officials should approach complex tax matters with prudence and efficiency and use their experience to contribute to economic development in the interest of the country,” said Auditor General and Comptroller General of India (CAG) K Sanjay Murthy in Nagpur on Wednesday.
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 79th batch of Indian Revenue Service (IRS) at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) as the chief guest. Principal Income Tax Commissioner, Nagpur, Malti Sridharan, Director General, NADT, S K Mathews and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
Murthy said that the Indian Revenue Service is one of the services that drives economic development and progress in the country and that officers of this service should study the workings of other departments to understand the intricacies of tax administration. He also mentioned that the National Academy of Direct Taxes recently received a five-star nomination from the Capacity Building Commission (CBC) would be a model for other Government training institutions.
K Murthy also advised IRS officers to broaden their knowledge base and to study the workings of the audit department as an auditor and gain hands-on experience in the audit and accounting work required in tax administration. While presenting the training report of the 79th batch of IRS officers, the Director of this course, Salil Bijur, said that this batch has a total of 182 officers, including 2 officers from the Royal Bhutan Service.
The youngest officer is 23 years old and 67% of the trainee officers in this batch are women while 49% of the officers have an educational background in engineering. Total 47 trainee officers have completed postgraduate studies and 2 officers have obtained PhD. The maximum number of officers is from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Kerala as well as other states.
On this occasion, 182 trainee officers were administered the oath of office by the Academy’s Additional Director General, Siddharam Appa Kapattanwar.
Officers from the National Academy of Direct Taxes, officers from the 78th batch, and senior officers from the Income Tax Department were present on the occasion.
