City President Dayashankar Tiwari drafts criteria for the aspirants

Considering huge number of aspirants for Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) polls, to prevent likelihood of disappointed ones leaving the organisation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chalked out a strategy. BJP received whopping 1,490 applications from aspirants. City President Dayashankar Tiwari drafted criterias as an eligibility for becoming BJP candidates.

Tiwari himself reached 2,168 booth heads in city much before the announcement of the elections. He explained to them the criteria and also asked to reach out to the aspirants to make them aware of it. Tiwari had been contesting municipal polls from a very sensitive area and stood victorious. BJP High Command, with a purpose, gave him leadership of city BJP unit aiming victory in municipal polls, like it had bestowed the responsibility of State for local body polls upon Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Tiwari and all the senior members of the party are conducting interviews at Mangalam at Ganeshpeth as per the timetable.

Aspirants as per Assembly constituencies or Prabhag are lining up, awaiting their turn. “Our interviews are taking quite a good time. We are talking and listening carefully to the aspirants. Our aim is to get to know everything about the aspirants, their take if they become corporators, their vision about city,” said Tiwari while talking to ‘The Hitavada’. The interview panel is trying to understand the perspective of aspirants. By giving time to listen to them, the leadership is able to understand them.

The party has conducted at least three surveys of various nature of prabhags and the leaders and had studied them. The findings of the surveys and their indications is the major help for the leaders when they take interviews of the aspirants. This particular strategy may face difficulties if the elections are conducted as Mahayuti or even yuti between BJP and Shiv Sena. If BJP goes solo, then the party is unlikely to face major issue of hopping. Monitoring by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and State Chief of Local Body polls for BJP Chandrashekhar Bawankule will play a major role in these elections.

Most present corporators likely to continue

It had been speculated that BJP would replace 80% of its present corporators with new faces. But it is less likely to happen. During interviews it is being seen that whether the present corporator served people of his or her constituency with responsibility or not. After 2022 when the elected body of the Corporation was dissolved because of end of tenure, some people who had not contested polls in 2017 kept working for all three years as if they were the corporators. Some never attended the people, some behaved very rudely, told everyone not to approach them with any work. Some never stayed connected to people. All these points are being taken into consideration during interview by the BJP selection committee.
